Thor Halvorssen Interviews with Trish Regan of Fox News On Socialism

Fox News recently interviewed Thor Halvorssen regarding his thoughts on Bernie Sanders as a candidate against Hillary Clinton running as the Democratic Presidential Candidate in the upcoming election.

Thor Halvorssen is a Venezuelan human rights advocate and filmmaker in the public interest advocacy, individual rights and civil liberties, and a pro-democracy advocacy. Thor is also described as a “maverick” who champions the underdog and the powerless. Thor, described by Buzzfeed as a person who is plagued by the desire to right the wrong injustices and devotes his time to correcting those wrongs, whether the wrongs are owned by the left-wing or right-wing parties. Halvorssen graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the Founder and CEO of the Human Rights Foundation, and Founder of Oslo Freedom Forum. Thor’s father was a political prisoner in Venezuela. Thor’s mother was shot by the Chavez regime, and one of his first cousins is currently in prison in Venezuela.

The interview was brief, but Halvorssen is clear and concise when he speaks responding to the questions asked of interviewer Trish Regan on Fox News. Trish asked Halvorssen for his definition of Socialism and Thor eagerly provided historic patterns of socialism stating that people can take a historical definition of socialism or an academic definition of socialism as many democratic countries have socialist policies. There is a difference between socialist policy and socialist government. Many people are confused with the term and feel that Socialism, Communism, and Marxism is one in the same.

Regan asks Thor what his major objection is with the way socialism is practiced? Is it the looting of personal property that you dislike? Halvorssen responds with an overwhelming, ‘Of course, and if you take a country like Venezuela, and the government decided that prices will be set the way the government has decided they should be, and it creates a massive shortage of product, and what you end up with is a humanitarian crisis. Thor’s reason for the contribution to the Bernie Sanders campaign was because of the Democratic front-runner is a person who has taken millions and millions of dollars from many dictatorships countries such as Algeria, Barian, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and others. At the same time in the Republican Party, you have the front-runner who believes that Putin is fine, and that is also awful.

Thor states that Venezuela had a Labor Government for years, but the problem with Democratic Socialism comes when the executives take control and redistribute wealth to end poverty, and it does not work because the way to end poverty is to build more wealth, not redistribute.
