Whitney Wolfe Innovating The Online Dating Applications

Bumble is a social and dating app that was founded in 2014 by the current CEO, Whitney Wolfe. She is an American business person and entrepreneur residing in Austin, Texas which is also the headquarters for Bumble.

Whitney Wolfe received a B.A degree in International Studies from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas. While studying here, she partnered with Patrick Aufdenkamp to start up the Help Us Project, an entity that supported individuals affected by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Together, they designed and sold tote bags made from bamboo, and the proceeds would benefit the Ocean Futures Society.

After completing her education, she volunteered in various orphanages in Northern Thailand and Cambodia. Whitney Wolfe, however, felt that her time would be better utilized by engaging in societal transformation using education and technology.

After this realization, Whitney went back to her hometown and set off her career at Hatch Labs. Her role here was steering the development of various startup projects, including the co-founding of what would eventually be known as Tinder. This was done under the IAC startup incubator.

Whitney Wolfe left Tinder in 2014 and moved to Austin where she started Bumble, in partnership with Andrey Andreev, the founder, and CEO of leading social discovery platform, Badoo.

About 12 months after it was founded, the app had amassed over 80 million matches and 15 million exclusive conversations.

In April 2016, Bumble was recognized as the fourth-ranked dating app, based on the monthly user records. This success is attributed to the uniqueness of the app as it is the only dating app that offers complete control to women by letting them make the first move. When two individuals are matched, the woman proceeds to make the first move.

This shift has built on Bumble’s reputation by making it more respectful and trustworthy. This has resulted in individuals flocking the app frequently.

The app has registered over 11 million users as of January 2017 and aims to continue the expansion of their user base.

Owing to her exploits, Whitney Wolfe has been listed in the 2017 Forbes 30 under 30 in consumer technology, Elle’s Women in Tech in 2016, and much more.
