OSI Industries Creates The Food You Enjoy At Many Restaurants

Meat processing takes a lot of skill to cut and package with just the right precision, and even more so when you prepare it for foods like pizza, breakfast sandwiches and cheeseburgers. OSI Industries has been doing this for restaurants like McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s and others over the years and they’ve also made sure their employees have adhered to safety practices, and that their equipment has had minimal environmental impact. In recognition of maintaining strict safety guidelines, the British Safety Counsel gave OSI Industries the Globe of Honour in 2016, and they’re currently listed at number 10 in the world’s largest meat companies.

OSI Industries originated from a butcher shop that Chicago native Otto Kolschowsky started back in 1909. With a lot of hard work that he and his sons put into it, they were able to grow it into a wholesale company that became well-known in the midwest, and it was originally named Otto & Sons to carry on the family name. As the Kolschowsky sons started taking over the company, they met with Ray Kroc who owned McDonald’s at the time and shook hands on what would be their biggest partnership to date. The company had certainly come a long way from the butcher shop it had started out as, but it still needed some more funding because McDonalds was set to grow both in the US and internationally. Otto & Sons hired a consultant named Sheldon Lavin to help them startup a new plant, and because of how well he did that job he was asked to come to the company full-time and was later promoted to CEO. When the Kolschowsky sons retired, Lavin renamed the company OSI Industries.

OSI Industries started buying new factories and making acquisitions in the late 1970s, and by the 1980s they were doing business in India. They opened their first plant in China in the 1990s, and three big companies they’ve bought are Baho Food in the Netherlands, Flagship Europe and a Tyson Food Plant that was about to be closed in south Chicago. Every time they have bought a company they have always offered to retain employees and make them part of the new family. OSI Industries also works with the Ronald McDonald House Charities, a foundation at McDonald’s that supplies medical treatments to children in need and scholarship funds for young people who need help paying for college.
