Whitney Wolfe Herd Major Player in Dating App World

Whitney Wolfe Herd is a major player in the dating app world. Her app Bumble is empowering women to cyber select from higher quality men. She helped with the creation and marketing of Tinder. She eventually was approached by Badoo founder Andrey Adreev. Adreev was hoping Herd would be interested in creating a new dating app.

Herd was the vice president of marketing at Tinder. The former Southern Methodist University student had already displayed her brilliance in the tech world. Adreev sensed that. Herd wanted to develop something that could be easily distinguished from Tinder. She wanted an app that helped women have control. She wanted women to be able to “make the first move.” She eventually settled on the name Bumble. Bumble was launched with the help of Adreev in 2014. The app blossomed early. It’s aim was clear. It’s difference was distinguishable as intended. It was a hit.

Men aren’t allowed to message women until women have messaged them first. It’s a unique approach. It allows each female subscriber to have control. It empowers a woman to make the first move. It keeps unwanted advances away. A photo verification process helps keep fake users at bay. This allows women to sort through real men. It also allows women to sort through men who are patient enough to wait for a message. It’s a completely different vibe. Many refer to Bumble as “classy.” That’s what Whitney Wolfe Herd was hoping for. She wanted a dating app that felt more comfortable.

The public certainly agrees. Bumble continues to grow with over 50,000 new users a day. The app now has 27 million users. Roughly 10% of those users pay a subscription fee. Bumble helps monetize the app with a $9.99 per month subscription charge. The app is free to download. Bumble is scheduled to make around $180 million in revenue in 2018.

For her efforts, Whitney Wolfe Herd has been recognized nationally on different occasions. She joined Business Insider’s 30 Most Important Women Under 30 list in 2014. She’ll release a book in the fall called “Make the First Move.” She’s working on a new app called BumbleBiz. The sky seems to be the limit for this Salt Lake City native.
