In 2012 Chris Bunch and James McBridge a hotelier friend of his bought a hostel on Indonesian island’s Sumba beach. The hostel cost the two 30 million dollars to refurbish it. Later in 2015, the hostel was reopened as a five-star resort by the name Nihiwatu. The hotel was named in 2016 by Travel + Leisure as the best hotel in the universe.  According to Burch, the hotel was particularly bought for his children. Moreover, the other reason for buying the hotel was as one way of giving back to the community. Nihiwatu comprises of 22 personal villas which have plunge pools. Additionally, the resort has a private house for Mr. Bunch called Raja Mendaka. However, Raja Mandaka is also accessible to customers. Presently, Nihiwatu forms the island’s biggest local employer. The hotel contributes a portion of his profits to the community.
